The goal of the degree programs in the English Department is to give the students a familiarity with English literature and linguistics and with the culture of the English-speaking world through:

  1. the achievement of a high level of oral and written expression in English
  2. preparation for advanced studies in English in Israel and abroad in the fields of literature, linguistics, the English language, and in teaching and translation
  3. familiarity with the many different faces of the culture that has been created in the English-speaking world and preparation for work in English in such areas as law, history, computers, and business.

The English Department offers several different programs to meet a variety of different interests and needs for students who wish to work in English, either as their major field of study or as a second important skill in support of other major fields.

  1. A program in English and American Literature, offering a full range of courses in all periods and topics of literature in English on a research level.

  2. A multi-disciplinary "Combined Stream," especially attractive to all who wish to work in English on a fluent and professional level. This includes those who wish to teach, edit, and/or translate into English as well as students majoring in other disciplines but for whom English is a vital and necessary skill, including law, business, history, computers, etc.

  3. Up to the 2007-8 academic year, a program in English Linguistics, giving intensive instruction in the linguistic structure of the English language and in generative linguistics on a research level. This program will no longer be offered as of the 2008-9 academic year.

At the graduate level, we offer MA and PhD degrees in English and American Literature.
