The Jerusalem Armenian Database

The Jerusalem Armenian Database is a collection of texts in Classical and Medieval Armenian. Most of the texts were entered through the joint Leiden-Jerusalem Armenian Database project, and we express our deep appreciation to Prof.J.J.S.Weitenberg who was moving the spirit of the project, and whose contribution in this area is very crucial. The original Leiden-Jerusalem Armenian Database, which was headed by J.J.S.Weitenberg (Leiden) and M.E.Stone (Jerusalem) was reorganized in 1996. The Leiden Armenian Database contains most of these texts and a substantial number of additional ones.

The material in the Jerusalem Armenian Database is in Macintosh format, using M. Eversons' Armenian Utilities for the Macintosh. This page gives an overview of the available texts and is divided as follows:  

  1. List of texts translated from Leiden Duocode into Microsoft Word Format for Macintosh.
  2. List of two texts inputted and formatted specifically for the Jerusalem DataBase by Ed Mathews.
  3. List of Biblical books that have been processed into final readable MS Word formats from independent sources.
  4. List of texts from the same source in MS Word readable text format, but without chapter and verse numbers.
  5. List of three texts translated into MS Word text readable format, but not finally edited.

    6. 1. The following texts have been translated from Leiden Duocode into MicroSoft Word Format for Macintosh and formatted according to the editions used to produce these files:

    2. The following two texts were input and formatted specifically for the Jerusalem DataBase by Ed Mathews:  
    • Elishe Exhortation to the Solitaries 
    • Ps. Ephrem Commentary on Genesis 

    3. The following biblical books have also been processed into final readable MS Word format from independent sources:  
    • Deuteronomy - Zohrabian edition 
    • Esther - Critical edition 
    • Exodus - Critical edition 
    • Exodus - Erznkan edition 
    • Genesis - Critical edition 
    • Genesis - Erznkan edition
    • Judith - Critical edition 
    • Leviticus - Erznkan edition 
    • Leviticus - Zohrabian edition 
    • Numbers - Erznkan edition 
    • Numbers - Zohrabian edition 
    • Tobit - Critical edition 
    With the exception of the Zohrabian editions, which came with no notes, all of these texts exist in two versions: one with all the critical notes, the other without.

    4. The following texts from the same source now exist in MS Word readable text format, but were given to us without chapter and verse numbers. These chapter and verse numbers remain to be put in. They will have to be put in by hand.

    5. The following three texts have been translated into MS Word text readable format, but are still awaiting the edition used for the final stage of the format process:  
    • Arakel Siwnec'i Adam Girk' 
    • Chrysostom, Unidentified Homily 
    • Philo, Questions on Exodus 6.

    6. In addition to the above files that are not entirely completed, there remain 31  
    folders that contain a total of 970 files that have come in non-Leiden Duocode format. A new conversion table is presently being designed to translate these texts into MS Word readable format. 

    7. Lastly, we are about to begin to enter into a database all the relevant bibliographical information for each individual text.
